I
joined The Union of Catholic Mothers 37 years ago. One day I went to my
Parish Infant school to register my daughter (who was 18 months). Obviously
I was too early, the headmistress suggested I go along to the Parish Pram
Club, which was run by UCM members.
That same evening found me cooking chicken and chips at our Social (we
don’t waste time in West Derby).
I began to enjoy foundation meetings; it was my time, my space. I became
part of our entertainment committee and eventually I became President.
As the children grew older, with more time to spare, I was appointed on
to archdiocesan committee as Study Officer this office combined the role
of Media duties, which included submitting a weekly column titled “
Mums the Word “ for the Catholic Pictorial, I really enjoyed this
work.
After Four years I was elected to Vice President and then Diocesan President
altogether 12 years on the Liverpool Committee.
I was asked to put forward for National Vice President, this was a wonderful
experience, and I was truly privileged and very humble to devote this
time to the UCM.
Currently I’m half way through my term as National Deputy President,
but after 24 years of committees from foundation through to National,
I have always been happy to touch base throughout my various roles and
happy to return to my grass roots, my home foundation of St Paul’s
West Derby
